The story is both romantic and tragic, as we well know. But what is incredible is that the play is a "beautiful" tragedy.

The play starts with a Prologue in sonnet form, a masterly precis of the story. As it describes Romeo and Juliet’s eventual death, it also helps to create the sense of fate that permeates the entire play.
